Clemson Lock Mike Fitzgerald Selected as All American
Jun 19, 2008 Clemson senior Mike Fitzgerald wrapped up an amazing collegiate career last weekend at the Collegiate National All Star Championships in Glendale, Colorado.Fitzgerald represented the South All Stars against Pacific Coast and the Mid Atlantic All Stars in two agonizingly close matches. The South All Stars pushed Pacific Coast to within nine points at the final whistle and forced overtime versus Mid Atlantic before coming up short. In both games, Fitzgerald led the forwards around the field, and his strong running was rewarded with a try against Mid Atlantic.
Because of Fitzgerald's strong open field running and solid defense, he was named to the 2008 All American squad as an honorable mention. This marks only the second time a Clemson Rugby player has been named All American. The first was scrumhalf Dutch Jones in 2005.
The All American honor caps a distinguished career for Fitzgerald at Clemson. Fitzgerald's career highlights include being named to two GRU All Star teams, one PRU All Star team, and three All South All Star teams. Fitzgerald also served as captain for Clemson from 2006-2008 and was named to the American Rugby News All-American team in 2008.

Fitzgerald will now wait to see if he is chosen to travel with the All American team to tour New Zealand in July. In August, Fitzgerald will officially close the book on his collegiate career when he starts medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Chalreston, SC.
